Short-Tailed CatsSome breeds arise out of physical characteristics other than coat length, body type, or coloring. The tailless breeds, for example, resulted primarily from a genetic mutation, which breeders then selectively bred to maintain.
The following is an overview of the short-tailed breeds.
American BobtailAs the name implies, this cat has a naturally occurring short, stubby tail.
It comes in short and longhaired varieties and numerous colors. Although its true origins are unknown, some speculate that the breed may have sprung from a bobcat/domestic cat hybrid.
Japanese BobtailAnother short-tailed cat, this breed is native to the Far East and comes with long or short hair. Calico (mostly white with patches of red and black) bobtails are considered good luck in their native land. The gene that creates the bobtail feature is unrelated to the lethal Manx gene and isn’t associated with genetic flaws.
ManxThe best known short-tailed breed of cat hails from the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea, hence its name. It is relatively rare and challenging to breed, due to the lethal nature of the mutant gene that creates the tailless feature in this breed.
Pixie-BobThis breed is another short-tailed cat that looks like a little bobcat.
